PhD Students
We are actively looking for PhD students with a strong interest in micro/nanotechnology and optics. We encourage applications from motivated students from diverse backgrounds and disciplines including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied physics, physics, materials science and related fields.
Prospective candidates should apply to the Department of Mechanical Engineering by the Fall admission deadline. In your application, please indicate your interest in our research and your motivation to join our group. Additionally, please send a copy of your CV directly to Claudio Hail (cuhail(at)berkeley.edu). Applicants pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering are also welcomed.
Admitted PhD students interested in joining the lab please send your CV and a brief statement of research interests to Claudio Hail (cuhail(at)berkeley.edu).
We also encourage students to apply for external fellowships. A variety of doctoral fellowships that align with our research focus are available as listed below. Note that many fellowship deadlines may be earlier than the graduate school application deadline.
- NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
- Hertz Fellowship
- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship
- Soros Fellowship for New Americans
- AAUW International Fellowship
- DOE NNSA Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship
- DOE NNSA Laboratory Residence Graduate Fellowship
- NASA NSTGRO Fellowship
- DOD SMART Scholarship
Postdoctoral Scholars
We are looking for postdocs with experimental experience in nanophotonics, metamaterials and additive manufacturing. Please contact Claudio Hail (cuhail(at)berkeley.edu) with your CV, a brief description of past research accomplishments and future goals, and two academic references.
We are happy to support postdocs to obtain external funding for your postdoctoral research. A variety of funding opportunities for postdoctoral scholars exist:
